Elisabeth Elliot (1926–2015) was an American missionary whose husband, Jim Elliot, was killed in 1956 attempting to reach the Waorani people of Ecuador with the gospel — and who then, remarkably, returned to live and minister among the same people responsible for his death. That story made her a well-known figure, but her lasting influence rests on five decades of writing and speaking afterward, grounded in hard-won, unsentimental faith rather than the story alone.

Her book Let Me Be a Woman laid out a complementarian account of gender: men and women are equally made in God's image and equally valuable, but called to distinct, non-interchangeable roles, and Elliot argued a woman's dignity rests on her full humanity as God's image-bearer, not on achieving parity with men in every role. Her own life — missionary linguist, widow, later a long remarriage after a second husband's death from cancer, five decades of sustained teaching and writing — is itself part of her argument that women's callings are neither limited nor secondary.
